Effects of Fructose vs Glucose on Regional Cerebral Blood Flow in Brain Regions Involved With Appetite and Reward Pathways

Abstract Full Text

JAMA. 2013;309(1):63-70. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.116975

To study neurophysiological factors that might underlie associations between fructose consumption and weight gain, Page and coauthors assigned 20 healthy volunteers to undergo 2 magnetic resonance imaging sessions in conjunction with ingestion of glucose or fructose in a random-order crossover trial. Purnell and Fair provide comment in the related Editorial.

Effect of Maintenance Tocolysis With Nifedipine in Threatened Preterm Labor on Perinatal Outcomes: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract Full Text
free access
JAMA. 2013;309(1):41-47. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.153817

In a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 406 women with threatened preterm labor (26-32 weeks gestation) set in the Netherlands, Roos and colleagues assess the effects of maintenance tocolysis with nifedipine in reducing adverse perinatal outcomes.

Abstract Full Text

JAMA. 2013;309(1):48-54. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.153812

In a population-based study of 5 Nordic countries, Stephansson and coauthors analyzed data from more than 1.6 million singleton births to determine whether women who had been treated with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor before or during pregnancy were at risk of having stillbirths and whether their infants were at risk of death.

Survival of Patients Receiving a Primary Prevention Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator in Clinical Practice vs Clinical Trials

Abstract Full Text

JAMA. 2013;309(1):55-62. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.157182

Al-Khatib and coauthors performed a retrospective analysis to determine whether the survival of patients who received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in primary prevention clinical trials differs from that of trial-eligible patients receiving a primary prevention ICD in clinical practice.
