Formal surgical education scholarship was uncommon 20 years ago. The landscape for surgical education research has grown exponentially in terms of the quantity, rigor, and diversity of methodologies. A PubMed search using the term “surgical education” retrieved 2840 articles for 2002, 7419 for 2012, and 15 308 for 2022 (a 539% increase compared with 2002). This growth in published manuscripts highlights the increased interest in education research in recent years and coincides with numerous changes occurring in surgical education. Qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies are commonly applied to surgical education research to study curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, simulation, professional development, and other topics. Nevertheless, the quality of education research has been questioned, highlighting the need for high-quality investigations to foster the scholarship of surgical education.1
