Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapy for the treatment of select movement and neuropsychiatric disorders including Parkinson disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), and dystonia.¹ Medtronic received approval for treatment of medication-refractory ET in 1997, received approval for PD in 2002, and received humanitarian device exemptions for dystonia and obsessive-compulsive disorder in 2003 and 2008, respectively. In 2016, the Abbott Infinity DBS directional 4-contact lead system was approved for ET and PD. In 2017, Boston Scientific announced approval of the Vercise DBS system for PD, with multiple independent power sources for an expanded 8 total contacts located on the DBS lead.
