Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established therapy for the treatment of select movement and neuropsychiatric disorders including Parkinson disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), and dystonia.1 Medtronic received approval for treatment of medication-refractory ET in 1997, received approval for PD in 2002, and received humanitarian device exemptions for dystonia and obsessive-compulsive disorder in 2003 and 2008, respectively. In 2016, the Abbott Infinity DBS directional 4-contact lead system was approved for ET and PD. In 2017, Boston Scientific announced approval of the Vercise DBS system for PD, with multiple independent power sources for an expanded 8 total contacts located on the DBS lead.
