Cyclones go backward

Once again, Iowa State got to third-and-short. And once again, a penalty pushed the team back.

A snap infraction followed by a Max Llewellyn sack on Rocco Becht leads to a punt. Iowa takes over at its own 37 after Kaden Wetjen's return.

Kaleb Johnson scores the first touchdown of the game

Two plays after the punt, Iowa finds the end zone.

Kaleb Johnson scampered in from 27 yards down the right sideline to get the Hawkeyes on the board. It's 7-0 after Drew Stevens' PAT.

Cyclones punt after chaotic first drive

Iowa State was stuck with bad field position, but the offense didn't do itself any favors.

After a run by Abu Sama got Iowa State to third-and-1, a pair of pre-snap penalties moved the Cyclones back to where they started. One more short run led to a punt, and Iowa will take over at the ISU 43.

Iowa, Iowa State injury reports

Iowa will be at nearly full strength Saturday. Receiver Seth Anderson is listed as out, along with linebacker Jayden Montgomery. Anderson's absence was expected; the second-year Hawkeye also missed Iowa's Week 1 game.

The Cyclones are not mandated by their conference to release an injury report, but Iowa State did announce that Jalen Travis is out for Saturday's game.

Travis has not made his Cyclone debut yet since transferring from Princeton over the offseason. He was expected to compete for the starting left tackle spot.

Week 1 results

Iowa's vaunted defense pitched a shutout against Illinois State, but that's not much of a surprise. The big news was Iowa's offense — in new offensive coordinator Tim Lester's first game at the helm — putting up 40 points, including a dominant 34-point effort in the second half.

The Hawkeyes totaled up 492 yards of offense and 23 first downs. Both of those marks would have been season-highs last year, and you'd have to go all the way back to September 2019 to find a higher yardage total by an Iowa offense.

Over in Ames, Iowa State needed just 38 seconds to score its first touchdown. Then, the Cyclones eased off the gas pedal and coasted to a 21-3 victory over North Dakota.

The Cyclone defense allowed North Dakota to sustain multiple long drives, but with the exception of a second quarter field goal, those possessions came up empty.
