“Have you ever used a uterine manipulator?” the resident asks, gesturing to the narrow space between the patient’s legs. “Have a seat.”

I hesitate, then cautiously sit, unsure if I can stay awake without side steps and calf raises. I place my hand on the black plastic handle and hope no one senses my unease as the resident demonstrates, steering my wrist like a mechanical joystick.

“We’ll be back here on the robot,” announces the surgeon, gesturing to the surgical console at the room’s edge. “Holler if you have questions.”

I nod and glance at the clock, calculating when I would need to leave to have enough time to nap before my 5 pm shelf review session.
