THE OTHER OFFICER WHO WAS SHOT IN THE HEAD CONTINUES TO RECOVER AND IS EXPECTED TO SURVIVE. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED YESTERDAY MORNING ON EAST 24TH STREET AND EASTON BOULEVARD. Update: Des Moines police officials on Tuesday said the officer who was shot in the head remains in a local hospital in critical condition. The officer shot in the arm has been released from the hospital. None of the officers involved, or the suspect who was killed in the shooting, has been publicly identified.Two Des Moines police officers are in the hospital and a suspect is dead after an exchange of gunfire early Monday morning on the east side of Des Moines. Officers attempted to stop a vehicle around 1:40 a.m. near the 2500 block of Easton Boulevard. The driver didn’t stop, according to a news release from Des Moines police, and the officers pursued. The suspect vehicle crashed at E. 24th Street and Easton Boulevard. The driver didn't comply with instructions to surrender to officers on the scene, Sgt. Paul Parizek said in a news conference from the scene Monday morning.Officers used a taser to attempt to subdue the man, identified only as a 37-year-old male, then "violently struggled" with the four officers on the scene. "At one point (he) was on the ground outside the car, kicking up — that's when he pulled the handgun and started firing," Parizek said. Three officers returned fire, fatally wounding the man, who Parizek believed to be from Carlisle. Those three officers are on administrative assignment, per department policy.Police officials did not say how many shots were fired, but evidence on the scene shows what looks like more than two dozen casings."You're taking care of that threat," Parizek said. "You're going to keep shooting until that threat's taken care of."One officer was struck in the head and the other in the arm. Both are being treated at local hospitals for injuries not considered life-threatening."One of them is not able to talk to us.
