Des Moines police identify officers involved in deadly shooting
Des Moines police have identified the two officers who were involved in a chase last week that ended with an officer shooting and killing a suspect and another officer injured by friendly fire.
According to police, officers were called on July 30 to a residence in the 5800 block of SE 35th Circle for a report of a person violating a protective order. Police found the suspect, Weston Dean Derby, 45, of Bellevue, Nebraska, driving near the scene and attempted to stop his vehicle.
Derby led a chase that ended in the 4300 block of East Army Post Road. Derby then ran away on foot while two officers followed him. Police say Derby then pulled a gun on the officers.
"He initially points it towards his own head," Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek said. "He transitions from that to a two-fisted pointing right at the officers. Both officers did fire their weapons. And one of the officers was hit, and the suspect was also hit."
Derby died at the scene after he was struck by officer fire.
That officer injured by friendly fire was identified Wednesday as senior officer Jesse Schneider, 37, who has four years of service with DMPD. He was released from a Des Moines hospital on Tuesday and will continue his recovery at home, according to a news release.
The other officer involved was identified as 23-year-old Anthony Lampman, who has been with the department for 10 months.
Both officers remain on paid administrative assignment, which Des Moines police said is department policy for employees "following an on-duty critical or traumatic incident," according to the release. Lampman was previously placed on paid administrative leave after the incident.
The Iowa Department of Corrections is leading an ongoing investigation into the incident, assisted by Des Moines Police.
