Gov. Kim Reynolds signs bill ending gender identity protections in Civil Rights Act
A BILL REMOVING CIVIL RIGHTS PROTECTIONS FOR TRANSGENDER IOWANS IS NOW LAW. THE GOVERNOR SIGNED THE BILL INTO LAW THIS AFTERNOON AFTER A WEEK OF PROTESTS AND CONTENTIOUS DEBATE AT THE IOWA STATE HOUSE. OUR CHIEF POLITICAL REPORTER, AMANDA ROOKER, IS IN STUDIO WITH HOW IOWANS ARE REACTING TO THIS. AMANDA. WELL, JODI AND LAURA ON BOTH SIDES, THIS NEW LAW IS STIRRING UP AN EMOTIONAL RESPONSE, JUST LIKE THIS BILL HAS DONE OVER THE PAST WEEK AS IT FAST TRACKED THROUGH THE IOWA STATE HOUSE. IN A FACEBOOK VIDEO THE GOVERNOR ANNOUNCED THIS AFTERNOON SHE IS SIGNING THIS BILL INTO LAW THAT ENDS 18 YEARS OF LEGAL PROTECTIONS FOR TRANSGENDER IOWANS. REYNOLDS CALLED IT, QUOTE, THE RIGHT THING TO DO, SAYING THAT IOWA HAS ENACTED LAWS, QUOTE, PROTECTING GIRLS SPORTS FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN’S PRIVATE SPACES LIKE BATHROOMS AND LOCKER ROOMS. THAT AND THAT STRIKING GENDER IDENTITY FROM IOWA’S CIVIL RIGHTS ACT MAKES THOSE LAWS ENFORCEABLE. YOU’RE SEEING VIDEO OF THE PROTESTS THIS PAST WEEK AGAINST THIS BILL BEFORE IT WAS SIGNED INTO LAW. I SAT DOWN WITH CHUCK HURLEY OF THE CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE ORGANIZATION, THE FAMILY LEADER, WHO CELEBRATED THIS CHANGE. I ALSO TALKED WITH KEENAN CROWE, WHO HELPS LEAD THE LGBTQ ADVOCACY GROUP ONE IOWA. COCO CALLS THIS A, QUOTE, SAD DAY FOR TRANSGENDER IOWANS. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TRANSGENDER IOWANS THAT YOUR GROUP REPRESENTS? YEAH, IT’S VERY SAD DAY FOR TRANSGENDER IOWANS. IT NOW MEANS THAT THEY CAN JUST BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST IN A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT AREAS, INCLUDING CREDIT PRACTICES, HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT, ETC. SO VERY SERIOUS. WHAT THE LEGISLATURE PUT IN IN OH SEVEN, THE LEGISLATURE CAN TAKE OUT IN 25. THIS RULE DIDN’T WORK. IT WAS HURTING GIRLS. AND SO IT’S PERFECTLY LEGAL, BUT ALSO VERY WISE TO REMOVE A BAD RULE. THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE SAYS THIS LAW WILL NOT TAKE EFFECT UNTIL JULY 1ST. I ALSO SPOKE WITH TALKED WITH A CONSTITUTIONAL LAW EXPERT ABOUT WHAT LEGAL REMEDIES TRANSGENDER IOWANS HAVE IF THEY FACE DISCRIMINATION WITHOUT CIVIL RIGHTS PROTECTIONS IN PLACE.
