Protests continue at Iowa Statehouse over bill that would drop gender identity protections
RIGHT NOW. RIGHT NOW, IOWA SENATE LAWMAKERS ARE TAKING UP A CONTROVERSIAL MEASURE THAT WOULD REMOVE GENDER IDENTITY AS A PROTECTED CLASS FROM THE IOWA CIVIL RIGHTS ACT. YOU’RE TAKING A LIVE LOOK AT THE IOWA CAPITOL THIS NOON HOUR. AND TODAY’S DISCUSSION, FUELED BY HEATED PROTESTS. JUST 24 HOURS AGO. WE HAVE vlog AFFILIATE JACOBSEN LIVE AT THE STATEHOUSE THIS AFTERNOON. FOLLOWING THIS, BILL AND OPHELIA. A LOT OF PROTESTERS BACK AT THE STATEHOUSE RIGHT NOW. YEAH. JODI. ABSOLUTELY. WE’RE RIGHT NOW ON THE GROUND FLOOR OF THE STATE HOUSE. THE SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING IS TAKING PLACE IN G 15, AND YOU CAN SEE THERE’S A LINE OF STATE TROOPERS HERE, AND THERE’S ALSO A LINE OF PROTESTERS LIKELY WAITING TO GET INSIDE THAT ROOM. BUT I’M TOLD THAT THE ROOM IS AT CAPACITY. SO I WANT TO TAKE YOU DOWN HERE. YOU CAN JUST SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE LINED UP FOR THIS HEARING TODAY. AGAIN, THIS IS A BILL THAT WOULD REMOVE GENDER IDENTITY FROM THE IOWA CIVIL RIGHTS ACT. WE HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE, AND YOU CAN SEE JUST AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE, JUST HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE STRETCHED OUT HERE TODAY. THE SHOWING UP TO PROTEST IN OPPOSITION OF THIS BILL. WE DO KNOW THAT THIS BILL MADE IT OUT OF ITS SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING ON THE HOUSE SIDE YESTERDAY, AND THEN IT MADE IT OUT OF ITS COMMITTEE HEARING YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. AND WE SAW PLENTY OF PROTESTERS AT THE STATE ALL DAY MONDAY. WE’RE LIKELY GOING TO SEE MANY OF THE SAME PEOPLE BACK HERE TODAY. YESTERDAY DURING THE SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING, THEY DID HAVE TO PAUSE THAT HEARING BECAUSE IT GOT TOO LOUD IN THE HALLWAY. AND STATE TROOPERS WERE TOLD TO MOVE THOSE PROTESTERS AWAY FROM THE DOOR BEFORE THEY COULD CONTINUE WITH THAT HEARING. WE’LL SEE IF THIS CROWD GETS A LITTLE LOUD AND ROWDY. SO MUCH SO THAT THE SUBCOMMITTEE HEARING HAS TO BE INTERRUPTED AGAIN. RIGHT NOW, IT’S PRETTY TAME. NO CHANCE OF THAT. BUT WE’LL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS PROTEST AS IT DEVELOPS THROUGHOUT THE DAY. WE’RE LIVE AT THE STATE HOUSE. OFELIA JACOBSEN, vlog EIGHT NEWS. IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. ANOTHER BUSY DAY ON TAP UP ON CAPITOL HILL. OPHELIA. THANK YOU. WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS BILL AS IT PROGRESSES. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE vlog MOBILE APP AND TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS SO YOU NEVER MISS A
