Wade, vlog wanted to know how many people in Iowa receive abortions each year.The Iowa Department of Public Health keeps a detailed record of the demographics of women who have received abortions in our state. The most recent published record shows abortion data from 2020.In Iowa, 4,059 pregnancies were ended in 2020. Of this total, 3,222, about 79% of abortions, were medically-induced abortions. While 835, about 21% of abortions, were surgically-induced abortions.The term "medically-induced abortion" means that a prescription drug was used to end the pregnancy."Surgically-induced abortions" mean that a surgical procedure was used to end the pregnancy, removing the fetus and placenta from the mother's womb. The state also collects data including the age, race, level of education and marital status of Iowans who received abortions.Nearly 15% of women who received abortions in 2020 were married, while roughly 85% were unmarried.Looking at the age data of those who received surgically-induced abortions, shows that in 2020, 60 22-year-olds received abortions, more than any other age group. Past the age of 22, the number of abortions tends to go down as the age of the mother goes up. It's important to keep in mind that these numbers do not include miscarriages or treatment after miscarriages.
