Many Iowans who are pro-choice are taking efforts and raising their voices in hopes Iowa lawmakers won't establish a law that restricts reproductive rights. Gov. Kim Reynolds has not called for a special session following Friday's U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. However, that isn't stopping some Iowans from worrying about what could happen if that does occur. Following the leaking of the decision overturning Roe v. Wade in May, hundreds of Iowans came out to the Iowa statehouse days after for a reproductive rights rally. A coalition of local organizations put together the event, including Interfaith Alliance of Iowa's Connie Ryan. "It was needed in terms of just bringing people together," said Ryan, who is the executive director of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa. "Using your voice in whatever way is best for you and is comfortable for you and maybe even moves that comfortableness even one step further, do that." Thousands of people across Iowa seem to have taken that to heart. Following the decision on Friday, people throughout the state held rallies and marches of their own. Some were in favor of the decision, while others held protests. "The ruling yesterday was absolutely jarring," said Matt Sinovic, the executive director of Progress Iowa.Alongside Ryan, Sinovic was one of the other co-organizers for May's reproductive rights rally at the statehouse. In the coming weeks, Sinovic expects there to be more rallies, but also other action was taken by Iowans upset with the decision. "You can write a letter to the editor. You can call your elected officials," Sinovic said. While Iowans wait and see what actions the governor and Iowa legislature will take, both Sinovic and Ryan have stressed one important thing for people to remember. "Abortion reproductive care is still legal in the state of Iowa and safe in the state of Iowa," Sinovic said.Click below to see more from Kayla James:
