Anti-abortion supporters rally at the Iowa State Capitol
Saturday morning, a group of anti-abortion Iowans gathered on the west steps of the Iowa Capitol, praying for lawmakers to pass stricter abortion laws after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade.
"We are here to provide support for the Supreme Court as they go through and reverse a decision that was poorly constructed," Andrew Deick, an Iowa State University student said.
Iowa State Sen. Brad Zaun told vlog Friday night he wants his fellow Republicans to act soon. He says it would be practical to bring back the fetal heartbeat bill passed in 2019 before being struck down by a Polk County judge.
"I want to make sure that it's done and it's constitutional. And there is a fair process with legislation and allowing people to express their opinions to us elected officials," Zaun said.
Gov. Kim Reynolds calling a special session to pass legislation is what Democrats like state Sen. Janet Peterson are afraid of.
"If Republicans call a special session they will enact very extremism measures to ban abortions completely in Iowa," Peterson said.
Republicans hold a statehouse trifecta — control in the senate, house and governor's office.
If they wait until the normal session in January — Republicans will have to retain that control through November's midterm election.
"If they keep Republicans in power, Iowans will lose access to safe legal abortion care," Peterson said.
