Despite the fact that women comprise almost 50% of general surgery residents,1 gender disparities still exist in the experiences of pregnancy and parenthood during residency, as the article by Li et al2 elucidates. In this groundbreaking study, the authors surveyed all general surgery residents who took the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination in 2021. With questions on pregnancy-related complications, postpartum depression, and perceptions of support, among other topics, Li et al2 compared female residents with the partners of male residents.
