In Reply We would like to thank Dr Al-Rashdan for the comments regarding our randomized clinical trial.1 These comments helped to underscore the importance of interpreting the findings seen with this symptom monitoring intervention within the context of the trial design, intervention components, and outcome measures. We designed this study so that patients in both the intervention and the usual care groups reported their symptoms daily throughout their hospitalization, and only those assigned to the symptom monitoring intervention had their symptoms systematically presented to their clinical team. We agree that the daily reporting of symptoms in the usual care group may have influenced patients’ reporting of their symptoms to their clinical team, and thus our findings must be interpreted within the context of the details of the care received by patients in both study groups. Future efforts to understand the utility of inpatient symptom monitoring interventions could consider alternative strategies, including the use of a usual care group that does not report their symptoms daily throughout their hospitalization.
