The desiderata for any medical journal must certainly include the following: (1) the articles should be excellent, (2) the material should be pertinent to the readership, (3) the readers should be as many as possible, and (4) the material should be published as promptly as possible. Obviously, these desired features are not isolated. For example, if an author knows he or she can reach the largest possible audience who is interested in the subject, then the submission to that journal is appealing. How is the Archives doing?

The evaluation of excellence of articles must necessarily be subjective, but one measure of the acceptance is the number of times an article from a journal is cited. For the last two years available, that is, articles surveyed for 1984 and 1985, the Science Citation Index for the Archives increased 39%, a remarkable change.
