Abstract

This Manual of Surgical Therapeutics from the University of Illinois College of Medicine is openly patterned on the enormously successful Manual of Medical Therapeutics from Washington University, St. Louis. It fulfills, as its authors intended, the surgical house officer's need for a compact, ready source of useful information. Chapter and subchapter headings reflect the pragmatic content: "Trauma," "Cardiac Arrest," "Care of Drains and Tubes," "The Comatose Patient," "Massive Upper Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage," etc. The format is outline with abundant tables and a few well-chosen diagrams, all prepared with great care. The subject matter is presented with a minimum of controversy. A consensus point of view, generally, is advanced for dealing with specific problems. There is no pretense at textbook presentation of surgical disease; rather, the little book is a sort of information security blanket for the young physician facing new problems and great responsibilities. As such, it should serve very well.
