The study of melanotic tumors and related conditions, particularly of skin, eye, and central nervous system, has been intriguing but frustrating to clinicians and pathologists for years. In the past, most reviews have failed to integrate data generated by modern research techniques which might make the pathogenesis and therapy of these lesions less obscure. This monograph summarizes much of the basic clinicopathological information known about the various melanotic lesions and at the same time incorporates salient data relating to their chemistry and electromicroscopy. The advent of electron microscopy has led to a more precise definition of the ultrastructure of these lesions, and this data is well correlated with the biochemistry of melanin formation.

A more comprehensive text, an Armed Forces Institute of Pathology fascicle, written by Herbert Lund and Jane Marrow Krause in 1962, and entitled Melanotic Tumors of the Skin only presents the morphologic features of these lesions. McGovern
