Abstract

GENERAL NEWSÌý

Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern.Ìý —One hundred thirty-five medical, dental, engineering, science, nurse, and veterinary students from 120 approved four-year professional schools have spent the summer months in U. S. Public Health Service facilities under the year-round training program of the Service.The program is known as COSTEP, for Commissioned Officer Student Training and Extern Program. Assignments under COSTEP are open each year to medical, dental, engineering, science, nurse, and veterinary students who complete either their second or third year of professional education on or before July 1 and who are interested in becoming Reserve Officers in the Commissioned Corps of the Service.Students selected for COSTEP are offered commissions in grades equivalent to those held by officers in the Armed Forces. They are then placed on active duty for a period not to exceed 120 days. Opportunities for either medical or dental internships or active duty
