This volume, now in its eighth edition, follows the format of the previous editions and as such contains a massive amount of carefully condensed material. Completely revised to include the more recent advances in pediatrics and to exclude outdated material, it is designed as a handy reference, supplementing but not supplanting the standard pediatric texts. The disease entities are arranged by symptoms as well as systems with complete cross references and numerous charts, thus providing an outstanding index of differential diagnosis. The sections on normal growth and development, on feeding, and on preventive pediatrics are concise and informative. Exception might be taken to some of the therapeutic recommendations, but in a volume of this brevity a certain degree of didacticism is inevitable, and in those areas where space prohibits detailed elaboration (e.g., management of intravenous fluids and electrolytes) the authors provide references to the recent literature and to more complete
