Women who exercise for an hour a day are more likely to live to 90 than those who work out for less than 30 minutes, a study has found.
Researchers from the Department of Epidemiology at the assessed the impact body size and activity levels can have on life expectancy in both women and men.
They analyzed information from the Netherlands Cohort Study in 1986, in which 120,000 people were asked to share how much physical activity they do every day, how much they weigh, how tall they are and how much they weighed when they were 20 years old.
Researchers focused on the cohort of study participants who were aged between 68 and 70 at the time, 4,161 of whom were women. They then split them into groups depending on how long they spent , gardening or cycling to work each day to work out how many lived to the age of 90.
A total of 944 of the women made it to the milestone age. Those who exercised for between 30 and 60 minutes a day were 21 percent more likely to live into their 90s and beyond, with
Just over 450 men reached the age. Those who were active for 90 minutes a day were 39 percent more likely to live to age 90 and beyond.
