Simpson College community to honor late president Jay Byers in candlelight vigil Thursday

Community members at Simpson College will gather Thursday evening for a candlelight vigil to honor their late president, Jay Byers.He died at age 54, the college confirmed on Thursday of last week. Byers, a 1993 graduate of the college, had been president at Simpson since July 2023. Prior to that, he was the CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. During a press conference, the college’s Board of Trustees chair Terry Handley, said a wellness check was conducted at the president’s residence, known as the Sigler House, shortly before noon when Byers missed a scheduled Zoom meeting. Handley said this was "extremely unusual" for Byers to miss a meeting. That was where Byers was found deceased.The vigil will be held at 8 p.m. at Cowles Fieldhouse on the Indianola campus. Student government president Makayla Paulsen said she expects the event to be packed."We've all been kind of trying to figure out ways to honor him," she said. "It's pretty important that we're getting as many things happening as possible."Jaden Brown, a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity on campus, said he and as many brothers as can show up will be at the vigil. Byers was in ATO when he was a student in the '90s."He kept his eye out for us, took care of us," Brown said. "Now, we don't really have that as much anymore."Indianola Mayor Steve Richardson signed a proclamation at Monday's city council meeting to declare Friday, April 25, as "Jay Byers Day."
