Service offers unlimited movie tickets for $10 a month; AMC Theaters not happy
A movie theater subscription service is offering a new, unbelievable price.
has announced a new, low price of $9.95 a month that gets movie fans a pass good for watching one movie a day in theaters.
The service started in 2011, offering passes at $30 per month. The passes are accepted at 90 percent of theaters in the country.
In a , CEO Mitch Lowe said the price change “completely disrupts the movie industry in the same way that Netflix and Redbox have done in years past.”
"We are changing the way consumers think about going to the movies by making it possible to experience a broader array of films — from the latest summer blockbuster to a critically acclaimed documentary — through a subscription model," Lowe said.
While lovers of cinema celebrated the news, AMC Theaters slammed the service with a : "Not welcome here."
AMC said the new plan was "not in the best interest of moviegoers, movie theaters and movie studios," and that it would work to try to block MoviePass from its theaters.
An average AMC movie ticket cost $9.33 in the most recent quarter.
Lowe said in an interview with that his main concern regarding AMC is their negative stance "confusing customers and making them believe they can’t use this service at AMC theaters.”
