Matt Damon, star of the Jason Bourne and Ocean's franchises, has spoken out against Hollywood's over-reliance on franchises and shared universes. In a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Damon talked about the state of the movie industry vs television, and even virtual reality."The studios just want those big tent-pole movies," he said, "and it's really hard to do a tent-pole movie when you go in saying, 'There's not going to be a franchise here'. We'll see where it goes. It feels like there should be a correction, because we've been dealing with these superhero movies for so many years, but the audiences don't seem to be getting tired of them."While he seems a bit miffed with the state of Hollywood, Damon does add, "A lot has migrated to television, so it's good, because there's a home for it somewhere. But you can feel this spirit of risk calcifying. Something's going to come along and replace movies at some point as the VR world moves in on us."In the same interview, Damon also talked about George Clooney — who recently praised The Martian star as the greatest actor he's ever worked with.Following the controversial The Great Wall, Damon's next film projects Suburbicon and Downsizing have been garnering plenty of acclaim on the film festival scene.Suburbicon will arrive in the US first on October 27th.
