Netflix suspends production on 'House of Cards' amid Kevin Spacey scandal
Netflix and Media Rights Capital, the production company behind the massively successful drama 'House of Cards,' announced Tuesday that production on the sixth season has been suspended.
“MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on ‘House of Cards’ season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew,” the companies said in a joint statement.
A Netflix spokeswoman declined to provide further details about the action. Executives from the two companies traveled to the show's set in Baltimore to meet with the cast and crew involved in the production. Spacey was not scheduled to work that day.
On Monday, officials announced that the upcoming sixth season of the Emmy-winning drama would be its last. The companies said the decision to end the series had been made months ago, before allegations of inappropriate behavior of its star Kevin Spacey became public.
Spacey is embroiled in controversy after actor Anthony Rapp accused Spacey of sexual misconduct in the 1980s when he was 14 and Spacey was 26.
Spacey said he could not remember the alleged incident, but apologized for what he said would have been "inappropriate drunken behavior."
The Oscar winner also made the decision to come out as a gay man in his statement, a move that garnered swift backlash from Hollywood.
