Netflix will premiere almost 500 new original projects before the ball drops on 2018.On Monday, May 14, the streaming service's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, revealed it will have around 1,000 Netflix originals in total before the end of 2018 – meaning 470 of them will have to premiere over the next 7 1/2 months.Speaking at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit 2018 in New York, Sarandos also stated that 90% of Netflix customers regularly watch its original programming and that the bulk of content spending for 2018 – speculated to be $8 billion – is being spent on originals (via Variety).Yep. That's a lot of binge-watching.The news comes in the same week that Netflix officials announced a second season for "Lost in Space," while also giving Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro his own horror anthology series in the vein of "Black Mirror."It also comes after Sarandos previously confessed to not having watched all of Netflix's original programming due to it being "humanely impossible" because of the sheer volume of content.With Netflix set to have 1,000 originals aired by the end of 2018, that totally makes sense now.Given that Disney wants to release its own streaming service next year, which resulted in Netflix pinching back Disney-backed projects from its services (excluding the Marvel series), it's easy to see why Netflix is rushing to expand its original content library.Nevertheless, with some dud original films, like "Bright" and "Mute," failing to hit the mark, Sarandos may want to make some more time to quality check all the original content Netflix is imminently launching.Just not all 470 of them.
