Metro schools considering cellphone bans
The Ankeny School District is considering a cellphone ban for students.
The ban would prohibit the use of cell phones in the classroom. It would also include some disciplinary actions if students violate the ban.
The district says it wants students to have the best learning experience in the classroom, and phones are a distraction.
"We want our kids to leave our district being future-ready," said Samantha Aukes, the district's chief of communications. "Wireless devices have shown to be an issue in our classrooms.
The district will be discussing the policy at all future board meetings through September. Aukes says there will be six chances for a public discussion on the issue.

This now means students will not be allowed to use cell phones, tablets or smart watches while in school.
Hoover High School in Des Moines also committed to making the policy change for the 2024-25 school year. It says it is doing so to improve students' mental health.
