Iowa weather: Winter weather advisory expires for Polk County
IOWA’S NEWS LEADER. ALL RIGHT, OLIVIA, THANK YOU. LOOKS LIKE SHE’S ROVING AROUND THE SIDE STREETS OF DES MOINES. DAVID, THOSE ARE KIND OF ALWAYS THE LAST TO GET CLEARED AWAY, RIGHT? YEAH, MOST OF THE MAIN ROADS ARE IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE RIGHT NOW. BUT THOSE SIDE ROADS DEFINITELY STILL SLICK TO SNOW COVERED. YEAH, WE HAD A PRETTY GOOD BURST OF SNOW. COME ON THROUGH HERE THIS MORNING. THAT’S MOVING OUT NOW. YOU CAN STILL SEE A FEW FLAKES FLYING MOST OF THE AFTERNOON IS JUST GOING TO BE CLOUDY AND COLD. WE TRY TO GET IN SOME SUNSHINE HERE LATER TODAY. WE’LL SEE TOMORROW. PRETTY QUIET AS WELL. HOWEVER, HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND THAT IS OUR NEXT CHANCE FOR SOME SNOW. LOOKS LIKE THAT MOVES IN SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY. SOUTHERN IOWA REALLY STANDS THE BEST CHANCE FOR SNOW HERE. MAYBE SOME SNOW HERE INTO THE METRO. WE’LL SEE. IT COULD BE A BIG STORM FOR AREAS LIKE KANSAS, MISSOURI WHERE THEY’RE TALKING MANY INCHES OF SNOW. MAY MISS US JUST TO THE SOUTH, BUT WE WILL NOT BE MISSED BY THE COLDER WEATHER THAT MOVES IN. WELL, REALLY LATER TODAY. AND IT LASTS THROUGH NEXT WEEK. SOME OF THE COLDEST WEATHER WILL MOVE IN FOR NEXT WEEK. THERE’S OUR LITTLE BURST OF SNOW. IT CONTINUES TO SLIDE TO THE EAST, PUSHING OFF DOWN I-80 TOWARD THE QUAD CITIES, SOUTHERN IOWA. ALSO GETTING IN A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW. NOT QUITE AS INTENSE AS WHAT WE SAW EARLIER HERE TODAY, BUT YOU CAN STILL SEE THAT STEADY SNOW RIGHT ALONG I-80 EAST OF DES MOINES. SO YOU’RE STILL GOING TO RUN INTO SOME SNOW COVERED ROADS AS YOU’RE HEADING EAST FROM TOWN HERE THIS MORNING. STILL HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF SNOW HERE FLYING NORTH IN DES MOINES OVER TOWARD NEWTON, INTO MARSHALLTOWN AS SOME STEADIER SNOW HERE IN THOSE DARKER BLUE COLORS COME IN A LITTLE BIT CLOSER HERE TO THE METRO. AND YOU CAN SEE WE JUST HAVE SOME VERY LIGHT SNOW FLURRIES HERE. ANKENY DOWN INTO WEST DES MOINES. AND THAT’S ABOUT IT. AND IT SHOULDN’T LAST MUCH LONGER. THAT WILL BE OUT OF HERE WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR OR SO. A COUPLE OF POCKETS OF HEAVIER SNOW JUST ABOUT TO MOVE INTO OTTUMWA. SO YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SNOW ON THE GROUND. YOU’RE GOING TO PICK UP PROBABLY A GOOD DUSTING TO A HALF INCH HERE PRETTY QUICKLY, AS THAT MOVES ON THROUGH. AND HERE’S SOME OF THE SNOW TOTALS THAT WE HAVE HAD ROLLING INTO THE WEATHER CENTER HERE SO FAR THIS MORNING. AMES COMING IN ONE OF THE HIGHER TOTALS RIGHT ABOUT FOUR INCHES. BOONE ALSO REPORTING ABOUT FOUR INCHES. YOU COME IN DOWN INTO THE THE DES MOINES METRO AREA, ABOUT TWO INCHES OUT OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN JOHNSTON AND IN DES MOINES, DOWNTOWN, ABOUT AN INCH TO AN INCH AND A HALF. SO NOT A BIG HEAVY SNOW HERE DOWNTOWN, BUT ENOUGH TO CERTAINLY COAT THE ROADS COMPLETELY. THERE’S THAT BATCH OF SNOW PUSHING OFF TO THE EAST THERE. YOU CAN STILL SEE SOME ROADS ARE COMPLETELY SNOW COVERED AS YOU HEAD EAST FROM DES MOINES, BUT WE’RE SEEING QUICK IMPROVEMENT AROUND THE METRO NOW THAT THE SNOW IS BEGINNING TO WIND DOWN. TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE 20S, 26 DEGREES FEELS LIKE 17 WITH A NORTHEAST BREEZE ABOUT NINE MILES AN HOUR. 26 IN IOWA FALLS, 28 IN CHARITON, BUT WIND CHILLS ARE GENERALLY IN THE TEENS OUT THERE, AND THAT WILL BE THE CASE HERE THROUGH THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON. SO THERE’S THAT BURST OF SNOW BY 3:00 OR 4:00. IT’S PRETTY MUCH ALL OUT OF THE STATE. WE’LL SEE PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES, TEMPERATURES IN THE 20S, A HIGH OF ABOUT 29 DEGREES HERE AS THAT SNOW MOVES OUT, MAYBE A PEEK OF SUNSHINE. THEN OUR ATTENTION TURNS TO THE WEEKEND. NO ISSUES TOMORROW, SATURDAY IS PRETTY OKAY AS WELL. CLOUDY AND COLD, BUT WATCH WHAT HAPPENS SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY. THIS STORM SYSTEM TAKES SHAPE ACROSS KANSAS. MISSOURI TRIES TO SPREAD SNOW UP INTO IOWA, BUT NOTICE IT STRUGGLES TO REACH THE I-80 CORRIDOR. SO SOUTHERN IOWA COULD BE PICKING UP SOME ON SOME DECENT SNOW. BUT PASSING JUST SOUTH OF DES MOINES, SOMETHING WE ARE CERTAINLY GOING TO BE WATCHING VERY CAREFULLY HERE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. WHAT WE WILL NOT MISS OUT ON IS THE COLD AIR ABOUT 20 TOMORROW, 18 ON SATURDAY, 17 ON SUNDAY. LOOK AT THOSE MORNING LOWS NEXT WEEK. WE COU
