Iowa weather: Classes delayed, canceled across Iowa due to frigid temps

HAVE AN IMPACT OUT IN THIS WEATHER. THAT’S WHY WE’RE WEATHER ALERT. EXACTLY. WITH THESE TYPES OF WIND CHILLS, IT TAKES ABOUT 15 MINUTES FOR THE FIRST STAGES OF FROSTBITE TO SET IN, SO ALL EXPOSED SKIN. YOU GOT TO COVER THAT UP. YOU DON’T WANT ANY OF THAT TO BE HANGING AROUND BECAUSE ALSO YOU DON’T REALLY KNOW. IT KIND OF GOES NUMB. AND THEN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. YOU CAN START TO ACTUALLY GET SOME DAMAGE. SO YOU JUST WANT TO BE CAREFUL. THIS MORNING. THIS IS THE LAST DAY OF IT. AS FAR AS THE EXTREME COLD RIGHT NOW, IT DOESN’T LOOK VERY ACTIVE FROM OUR DES MOINES SKYCAM, BUT THE TEMPERATURES ARE VERY LOW, COLD AND BREEZY. THIS AFTERNOON. SNOW CHANCES ARE GOING TO BE RETURNING TOMORROW. WE’RE GOING TO SEE A LITTLE BIT OF FLURRIES HERE AND THERE, BUT RIGHT NOW THE WIND CHILL IS ANOTHER CHECK ON THESE. RIGHT NEAR THAT 30 BELOW HERE IN DES MOINES. SAME STORY FOR AMES, FORT DODGE, EVEN A LITTLE COLDER. SAME STORY FOR WEBSTER CITY. CLARION HAMPTON 36 BELOW. THAT DOES SEEM TO BE THE COLDEST SPOT ON THE MAP, ESPECIALLY IN NORTHERN IOWA, WHERE IT’S JUST A LITTLE BIT COLDER FARTHER SOUTH. STILL GOING TO BE AROUND THAT 25 TO 35 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. WIND CHILLS A VERY COLD START. YES OF COURSE. AND THEN AS WE GO INTO THE REST OF THIS MORNING, BY 8:00, WE’RE STILL TALKING ABOUT 25 TO 35 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. WIND CHILLS. WE DON’T SEE A SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT, NOT EVEN BY 10:00. WE ARE NUDGING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, BUT NOT GOING TO SEE THE TEENS BELOW ZERO UNTIL WE GET TO AROUND THE NOON HOUR. THAT’S WHEN WE DROP THE WEATHER ALERT. THAT’S WHEN WE DROP THE WARNINGS AS WELL. GOING INTO THE AFTERNOON. STILL GOING TO BE A COLD ONE AGAIN, THAT BREEZE DOES PICK UP. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE THE WIND CHILL IN THE SINGLE DIGITS BELOW ZERO. BUT THEN AS WE HEAD INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS, WE ARE ACTUALLY LOOKING AT IMPROVEMENT. TEMPERATURES AREN’T REALLY GOING TO DROP OVERNIGHT. THE WIND CHILLS ARE GOING TO RESPOND TO THE TEMPERATURE REBOUND. WE’LL BE HAVING FEEL-LIKE TEMPERATURES NOW IN POSITIVE TERRITORY FOR ALL OF WEDNESDAY. IN FACT, STARTING TO FEEL MORE LIKE THE 20S WITH HIGHS EXPECTED TO HIT THE 30S WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. BUT WITH THAT, WARM UP IS GOING TO BRING A CHANCE FOR SNOW. WE ARE TRACKING THAT SNOWFALL WELL TO THE SOUTH, DEEP SOUTH FROM TEXAS ALL THE WAY TO FLORIDA. THAT DOESN’T EVEN INCLUDE PARTS OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA, WHERE THEY’RE GETTING MORE SNOW THAN THAT. WE’RE GOING TO BE SEEING AS THAT’S FOR SURE. WE’RE NOT REALLY SEEING MUCH. AND EVEN THEN, THE NEXT SYSTEM HEADED OUR WAY TO THE NORTHWEST ISN’T GOING TO BE LEADING TO VERY MUCH FOR US, EITHER. IT’S NOT REALLY HOLDING A LOT OF MOISTURE FOR THERE TO BE SUBSTANTIAL ACCUMULATIONS HOUR BY HOUR. ALONG WITH THE GUSTS THE WINDS PICK UP. WE’LL HAVE GUSTS AROUND 20MPH TO 25MPH FOR THE AFTERNOON, BUT FROM THE SOUTHWEST. SO WE ARE GOING TO BE WATCHING THOSE TEMPERATURES REBOUND OVERNIGHT TONIGHT AS CLOUDS ALSO MOVE IN. THEN FOR TOMORROW MORNING. COULD BE LOOKING AT SOME LIGHT SNOWFALL NOW. MAINLY JUST GOING TO BE SOME FLURRIES. WE CAN’T RULE OUT A DUSTING IN SOME SPOTS WHERE WE’RE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT MORE OF THAT, MORE CONSISTENT LIGHT SNOWFALL, BUT IT IS GOING TO BE LIGHT. NOT GOING TO SEE ANYTHING REALLY. EVEN BREAKING HALF AN INCH IF THAT. MOST OF US, IF NOT ALL OF US, WILL BE SEEING LESS THAN HALF AN INCH OF SNOW. AND THEN AS WE GET INTO THE REST OF WEDNESDAY, SOME LINGERING FLURRIES BEFORE IT TAPERS OFF GOING INTO THURSDAY. BUT IT’S JUST GOING TO BE A DUSTING CHANCE. NOT GOING TO SEE ANY LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS. AND WE’RE STAYING AWAY FROM ANY MODERATE OR HEAVY SNOW, THAT’S FOR SURE. WEATHER ALERT FOR TODAY. EXTREME COLD THIS MORNING. MOSTLY SUNNY AS WE GO THROUGHOUT THE DAY. CLOUDS MOVE IN, SETTING UP FOR THE SNOW CHANCES, BUT WARMER TEMPERATURES FOR WEDNESDAY. THEN WE COOL THINGS BACK DOWN. NOT AS COLD, BUT STILL GOING TO BE CHILLY. STARTS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY WITH WARMER TEMPERATURES THIS UPCOMING SATURDAY. TIME NOW IS 522. KEEPING KIDS SAFE IN THE WATER IN IOWA. FATHER’S MISSION AFTER HIS YOUNG SON DROWNED IN A POOL LAST YEAR.
