Iowa weather: Widespread blowing snow as blizzard conditions continue into Saturday night

Iowa weather: Widespread blowing snow as blizzard conditions continue into Saturday night
TEMPERATURES WILL START TO MOVE INTO CENTRAL IOWA. FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. POLK COUNTY HAS PUT ITS EXTREME TEMPERATURE PLAN INTO EFFECT. THAT MEANS DART IS OFFERING FREE RIDES TO METRO WARMING CENTERS, AND EMERGENCY SHELTERS WILL OFFER WEATHER AMNESTY TO PEOPLE SEEKING SHELTER OVERNIGHT. AND IN THIS. WEATHER, IT’S GETTING HARDER FOR FIRSTRILLIONESPONDERS TO ANSWER CALLS. THE ADAIR COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS ASKING ANYBODY WITH A SNOWMOBILE WHO WOULD BE WILLING TO HELP FIRST RESPONDERS, AN EMERGENCY TO SEND THEM A MESSAGE ON FACEBOOK. THE SHERIFF IS HOPING TO KEEP THAT LIST. JUST IN CASE IT’S NEEDED. MOST PEOPLE DREAD HAVING TO GO OUT IN THIS WEATHER, BUT IN BEAVERDALE, THERE’S ONE DOGGY UP TO THE JOB. LOOK AT THE TAIL. I MEAN, THAT IS JUST WAGGING LIKE CRAZY. CASEY PHOTOJOURNALIST CORTNEY KINTZER SPOTTED THIS DOG TAKING A BITE OF. SCOOPFUL. ITS OWNER SHOVELED. DELILAH HAS SO MUCH ENERGY, IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW MUCH WE RUN HER OR HOW MUCH WE GO TO THE PARK, SHE JUST ALWAYS IS UP FOR THE NEXT ADVENTURE. SO IT’S PRETTY FUN. AND SHE OBVIOUSLY LOVES IT. SO I WISH MY WIFE LOVED TO SHOVEL AS MUCH AS SHE DID. OH MAN. AND THE GREAT PART. DURING THE INTERVIEW YOU CAN HEAR DELILAH PANTING, I THINK RIGHT? BUT STILL WANTING TO GO FOR MORE. DELILAH EVEN GETS A COAT, AS YOU CAN SEE, TO HELP KEEP HER WARM WHILE SHE TAKES A BITE OUT OF THE SNOWFALL. THAT IS SO CUTE. I GUESS IT’S NICE TO SEE SOMEBODY JODI ENJOYED THIS WEATHER BECAUSE MOST OF US DID NOT. JASON. YES. WELL, YEAH. I MEAN, FOR A LOT OF US, IT’S JUST A HEADACHE. YOU KNOW, THE ROADS ARE ABSOLUTE GARBAGE AND EVERYBODY’S JUST SITTING INSIDE. SO I GET IT. AND DELILAH ENJOY THAT SNOW FOR ALL OF US. WE’VE GOT A LITTLE BIT THAT JUST PASSED OVER THE TOP OF US NOW AND HAS BEEN WEAKENING AND DRYING OUT AS IT’S DONE. SO YOU GO TO THE SOUTH. WE’RE SEEING THE SAME OVER OSCEOLA AND ZOOMING OUT TO REGION-WIDE. HERE AGAIN, THAT BLIZZARD WARNING EXPANDS WESTWARD INTO NEBRASKA, UP INTO SOUTH DAKOTA, EASTWARD INTO ILLINOIS. SO IF YOU REALLY HAVE HAVE ANY TRAVEL PLANS THAT TAKE YOU NORTHEAST, SOUTH OR WEST, IT IS GOING TO BE HARD TO GET AWAY FROM THIS THING. THIS SYSTEM IS IMPACTING SO MANY STATES. BUT GOOD NEWS, A LOT OF THE SNOW THAT’S FALLING HAS DEPARTED. SO NOW WHAT? WE’RE MAINLY GOING TO BE DEALING WITH IS JUST THE BLOWING SNOW. AND BOY ARE WE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DEAL WITH IT. VISIBILITIES STILL A MILE OR LESS FOR FORT DODGE AMES THE METRO IOWA FALLS AT HALF A MILE EVEN OUT TOWARDS CARROLL YOU’RE AT A MILE AND ZOOMING IN ON THE METRO HERE. OSCEOLA UP TO THREE. SO CONDITIONS HAVE GOTTEN A LITTLE BIT BETTER FOR SOME OF US, BUT HONESTLY, I STILL WOULD NOT TEST THE ROADS BECAUSE THERE ARE 100% COVERED. TRAVEL IS NOT ADVISED AND WE’VE GOT SECTIONS OF ROADWAYS THAT ARE CLOSED RIGHT NOW OR IMPART BARRELL. AND YOU LOOK IN WEST DES MOINES, YOU CAN SEE HOW LIMITED THAT VISIBILITY IS AND HOW COVERED THOSE ROADS ARE WITH SNOW. WINDS HAVE NOTCHED UP A LITTLE BIT 26MPH SUSTAINED IN THE METRO, NEARLY 30 MILES SUSTAINED UP TO UP INTO KOSSUTH COUNTY. WIND CHILLS DOWN IN THE MID TEENS TO MID 20S BELOW AGAIN, IF YOU’RE OUT DRIVING AROUND AND YOU SLIDE OFF THE ROAD AND GET STUCK IN A DITCH, YOU DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO TRY TO GET THAT CAR OUT OF THAT DITCH IN COLD LIKE THIS. THESE ARE DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS AND THEY’RE GOING TO BE WITH US FOR A BIT HERE. YOU SEE, THE WINDS EVEN TOMORROW MORNING WE’RE TALKING 35 40 MILE PER HOUR GUSTS. AND THOSE CONTINUE ALL THE WAY IN TOWARDS SUNDAY MORNING BEFORE FINALLY BACKING DOWN. WE’VE GOT THOSE AT AROUND 20 TO 25MPH. PROBLEM IS, ONCE THE WINDS BACK DOWN, IT’S NOT LIKE WINTER IS DONE WITH US. WE HAVE GOT THE FRIGID ARCTIC COLD ON TAP TOO, WHICH MAKES THIS BLIZZARD OH JUST SO MUCH MORE ATTRACTIVE, DOESN’T IT? YOU CAN SEE THE AREAS HIGHLIGHTED IN ORANGE HERE. THAT IS THE BLIZZARD WARNING THAT GOES THROUGH 6 P.M. TOMORROW. NOW. SO THE IMPACTS TONIGHT MAN. AGAIN A LOT OF ROADS. NOT ADVISED FOR TRAVEL OR CLOSED OR IMPASSABLE. WE’RE GOING TO KEEP THE HIGH WINDS. NOT ONLY TONIGHT. WE’LL KEEP IT TOMORROW TO TRAVEL. TOMORROW IS NOT GOING TO BE A WHOLE LOT BETTER. WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO SEE THOSE WINDS BLOWING THAT SNOW BACK ONTO THE ROADS. AND THEN WE GET THE BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS, WHICH HAVE ALREADY MADE THEIR WAY IN. BUT THROUGHOUT THE DAY ON SATURDAY AND INTO SUNDAY, IT’S GOING TO GET EVEN WORSE. SO ANOTHER LOOK AT YOUR ROAD CONDITIONS. THERE’S NOT MANY GOOD ROADS OUT THERE AT THIS POINT, SO HUNKER DOWN AND JUST, I DON’T KNOW, ENJOY SOME PARKS AND REC OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THAT’S A GREAT SHOW ISN’T IT? WE HEAD INTO TOMORROW MORNING. YOU CAN SEE SIOUX CITY TAKING THE CAKE AT 30 BELOW, THE METRO AT 20 BELOW, HEADING IN TOWARDS SUNDAY MORNING, LOW TO MID 40S BELOW FOR THE WESTERN HALF OF THE STATE. OTHERWISE 30 BELOW AND INTO SUNDAY MORNING. WE’LL LIKELY BE IN THE MID TO UPPER 30S BELOW AGAIN. TWO SO DANGEROUS COLD IS GOING TO BE WITH US FOR A WHILE. WE HAVE GOT WIND CHILLS BELOW ZERO NOW. LUCKILY AREN’T GOING TO SEE WIND CHILLS ABOVE ZERO UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK. SO THIS IS GOING TO BE WITH US FOR A BIT. WIND CHILLS AGAIN DOWN TO 45 BELOW EIGHT DAY FORECAST FOR WEATHER ALERT DAYS IN A ROW. I DON’T KNOW THAT WE’VE EVER HAD THIS BEFORE THAT MEANS EACH ONE OF THESE DAYS WE HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO EXPERIENCE LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS. AND A LOT OF THIS IS COLD. AGAIN. THOSE WIND CHILLS ARE GOING TO BE WITH US FOR A BIT HERE. FINALLY, THOUGH, I WON’T CALL IT A SIGN O

Gusts will stay around 35-45 mph for today and Saturday with sustained winds at 20-30 mph. Travel is discouraged and, in some locations, roads are impassable because of drifting, icy conditions and crashes. We will continue to be Weather Alert for these days to highlight the life-threatening cold since frostbite can occur within 5-10 minutes to exposed skin.A calmer weather pattern will finally return as we get deeper into next week with temperatures trying to rebound back into the 20s.
