Iowa Senate advances two LGBTQ-related bills
On March 7, the Iowa Senate passed a bill that would ban gender-related care for minors and a bill that would restrict bathroom use for transgender people.
would ban 'gender transition procedures,' including puberty blockers, hormone therapies and other related surgeries for Iowans under the age of 18.
Republicans argue they are protecting kids with the bill, while Democrats say the measure could be dangerous.
Another bill passed would restrict bathroom use for transgender people.
would require transgender people to only use locker rooms or restrooms that correspond with the sex on their birth certificate.
The bill also gives Iowans power to submit a complaint if they think someone is using the wrong bathroom at school. Those complaints would be received by the attorney general who is then directed to investigate.
Both bills now need approval by the House.
The gender transition procedure topic is on the House's debate calendar Wednesday.
