AND RECOVERED A WEAPON. WELL, NEW TONIGHT, HUNDREDS OF PROTESTERS ARE PUSHING BACK AGAINST ANTI LGBTQ LEGISLATION AT THE STATEHOUSE. IT COMES AS SEVERAL BILLS SURVIVE THE FIRST FUNNEL FROM THE NATION. WE ARE IN THE FIGHT HERE IN IOWA RIGHT NOW. IOWA IS BECOMING AN EPICENTER IN THE FIGHT FOR LGBTQ RIGHTS. ON SUNDAY, A SEA OF PROTESTERS CONVERGED AT THE STEPS OF THE STATE HOUSE, WHERE REPUBLICANS ARE ADVANCING BILLS THAT TARGET GAY IOWANS. THEY WANT TO MAKE THIS PLACE A RACE TO THE BOTTOM. THEY’RE COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER TO SEE WHO COULD BE THE MOST HATEFUL. SEVERAL SPEAKERS STOOD ON A SOAPBOX TELLING PERSONAL STORIES OF HOW HARMFUL THESE BILLS WOULD BE IF SIGNED INTO LAW. WHAT CHANGED ME WAS THE KNOWLEDGE THAT I COULD NOT AND DID NOT NEED TO FIT INTO THE BOXES PRESCRIBED TO ME BY OTHERS. THE RALLY COMES AFTER HUNDREDS OF I WAS STUDENTS STATEWIDE, WALKED OUT IN PROTEST TO LGBTQ LEGISLATION. HERE’S WHERE LGBTQ RELATED BILLS STAND AT THE STATE HOUSE. ONE BILL WOULD BAN CHILDREN FROM GETTING GENDER TRANSITION SURGERY. ANOTHER MEASURE WOULD RESTRICT GENDER IDENTITY DISCUSSIONS IN THE CLASSROOM. A THIRD WOULD BAN TRANSGENDER IOWANS FROM USING THE RESTROOM OF THEIR CHOICE. PROPONENTS OF THE BILL SAY STUDENTS NEED PRIVACY AND PROTECT BOYS. BATHROOMS ARE MADE FOR BOYS WITH URINALS AND TOILETS. GIRLS BATHROOMS ARE MADE FOR GIRLS WITH TOILETS AND -- DISPENSERS. GIRLS AND BOYS ARE BARRED BIOLOGICALLY DIFFERENT WITH DIFFERENT NEEDS IN A BATHROOM. BUT LBGTQ RIGHTS ADVOCATES SAY LOVE HAS NO GENDER. RIGHTS. REPUBLICANS DID NOT ADVANCE A BILL THAT WOULD HAVE BANNED SAME SEX MARRIAGE B
