S(witch)ing the date: More communities reschedule Beggars' Night
Beggars' Night in Windsor Heights will happen on Oct. 28 this year after to change the celebration to the last Saturday of the month.
The more than 80-year Iowa tradition started as a trick-or-treating alternative to reduce Halloween crime by sending children door to door a day early, Oct. 30.
Last year, Bondurant rescheduled the holiday for the last Saturday of the month instead, followed by Marshalltown earlier this year.
Mayor Mike Jones said the idea inspired his council to consider the change and sent out an interest poll pitching the idea to people in the city. More than 60% of people said they preferred the weekend.
"I would hope that some of our neighbors would also consider doing this as well because I really do think it could be beneficial to the community," Jones said.
