Hawkeyes sell out doubleheader at Wells Fargo Arena
The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s and women’s basketball teams will have a full crowd this December in Des Moines. The event will be Dec. 16 at Wells Fargo Arena.
Tickets went on sale Wednesday morning for a much-anticipated doubleheader. The games will feature West Des Moines native Caitlin Clark with the Iowa women’s basketball team and the Iowa men’s basketball team.
The tickets available sold out within 90 minutes after going on sale at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
"We are at about 13,000 paid tickets for the event. Capacity is just over 14,000, and those remaining tickets that are still on hold, are on hold for the four participating teams," general manager of Iowa Events Center Chris Connolly said.
There are some tickets left that could become available, but there is high demand and a limited number of them. The Iowa Event Center told vlog that checking second-hand ticketing sites are people’s best bet at getting tickets.
This is the first time the Iowa women’s team will play at Wells Fargo Arena. The men last played there in 2018. This unique game comes after the high success both teams had last season.
"We hit the jackpot. I mean, obviously, the men’s basketball team has been successful under Fran McCaffrey and have made the tournament a handful of years in a row and they've done really well, the women’s team, I mean, they're coming off being in the national championship within a hair of winning the whole thing, arguably, Caitlin Clark is the best women's player in the country, um so it’s great for us really," Connolly said.
The Iowa Event Center hopes to be able to host more events like this in the future and looks forward to this opportunity to host the Hawkeyes.
"If you're a Hawkeye fan in the state, it doesn’t get much better," Connolly said. "You know you have a lot of people, you know, on the western side of the state, that often can't get to Carver-Hawkeye, well now this makes it, you know, a little more doable."
