Iowa surpasses 2,000 COVID-19 deaths, 1,500 hospitalizations

Iowa has surpassed a grim milestone with more than 2,000 COVID-19 deaths Tuesday. The state also reports a new record of more than 1,500 currently hospitalized with the virus.The Iowa Department of Public Health reported 33 additional deaths and 3,563 new positive cases Tuesday. As of 10 a.m., the health department reported 2,024 total COVID-19 deaths, 190,583 total positive cases and 109,929 total recoveries since the pandemic began. The state reported 1,991 total deaths and 187,020 positive cases 24 hours earlier. The state surpassed 1,000 COVID-19 deaths on August 19.Iowa reports a record 1,510 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. One month ago, the state reported 500 people hospitalized with the virus. That means hospitalizations have tripled in just four weeks. A record 288 patients are in intensive care, up from a record 271 the previous day. There were 215 patients hospitalized in the last 24 hours, down from a record 243 a day earlier. There are record 130 patients on ventilators in the state, up from 123 the previous day.The health department reports approximately 2,730 available hospital beds, with 361 ICU beds and 852 ventilators available. State data shows 1,097 of Iowa’s patients hospitalized with the virus had a primary COVID-19 diagnosis, while 413 were hospitalized for another reason but tested positive for coronavirus. Health department data shows 76% of those hospitalized are over the age of 60. IDPH reports 1,114,056 Iowans have been tested for COVID-19. The health department received 8,218 lab test results the previous day, with 2,003 positive results. The state receives test results from prior days that add to the overall total. The statewide 14-day positivity rate has decreased to 22.8%, down from 23.2% a day earlier.There are now 93 Iowa counties reporting a 14-day positivity rate higher than 15%, down from 94 a day earlier. Public schools in those counties can apply for a waiver to provide 100% distance learning. Seventy-four counties report a rate greater than 20%, while five report a rate higher than 30%. Jones, Page and Calhoun counties report a rate higher than 40%.Iowa has 96 long-term health facilities reporting COVID-19 outbreaks, down from 100 the previous day. There are 2,861 positive cases and 1,437 recoveries reported within those facilities.
