Activist Will Keeps recovering after being shot at Des Moines youth center he founded
Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie confirmed on Monday that activist and rapper Will Keeps was injured during a deadly shooting at Starts Right Here in Des Moines.
The shooting was reported at 12:35 p.m. Monday at Starts Right Here, a nonprofit organization focused on helping at-risk youth. Starts Right Here was created by Keeps. The organization started a partnership with Des Moines Public Schools in 2021.
According to police, two students were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. They have since died. Keeps was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Keeps was taken into surgery on Monday afternoon.
Des Moines police say three people are in custody following the shooting. One person has been identified as 18-year-old Preston Walls of West Des Moines.
Walls is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of criminal gang participation.
Walls is booked into the Polk County Jail.
Police say the two other people remain in police custody. They have not been identified.
