Consumer electronics retailer GameStop confirmed a suspected data breach earlier this week. The company warned customers that payment card data used on its website from August 2016 to February 2017 was accessed by criminal third parties."GameStop recently received notification from a third party that it believed payment card data from cards used on the GameStop.com website was being offered for sale on a website," the Grapevine, Texas-based chain said. "GameStop has and will continue to work non-stop to address this report and take appropriate measures to eradicate any issue that may be identified."GameStop hasn't revealed how many customers were affected by the breach, which reportedly compromised credit and debit card numbers, names, addresses and card verification codes. The news comes at a bad time for the popular chain - in March, GameStop announced it would close approximately 150 stores after experiencing sharp declines in sales. The retailer faces intense competition from companies like Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart, as more video game enthusiasts opt for purchasing titles digitally.Following the data breach, GameStop reminded customers to monitor their payment card statements closely and to report all suspicious charges.
