Fran McCaffery ejected during Iowa's loss to Illinois in the Big Ten Tournament
Fran McCaffery's season on the bench may have come to an unceremonious early end.
The Hawkeye men's basketball coach was ejected following two consecutive technical fouls in the second half of Iowa's game vs. Illinois Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament.
The technicals came following a foul on Iowa's Even Brauns, which led to a pair of free throws by Illinois' Tre White. White knocked down both attempts. As Iowa brought the ball up on the ensuing possession, McCaffery continued arguing with the officials and was whistled for a technical foul.
He didn't stop there. Seconds later, McCaffery picked up his second technical foul, ejecting him from the game.
"Such a mistake," Big Ten Network commentator Robbie Hummel said on the broadcast. "A nine-point game, this is still winnable for Iowa."

Illinois' Kasparas Jakucionis made all four free throw attempts after the technical fouls to extend the lead to a game-high 13. Illinois eventually won the game, 106-94.
McCaffery has had numerous run-ins with officials during his long career at Iowa. He was suspended and fined on multiple occasions, including 2014 after an outburst at Wisconsin and 2019 following a loss at Ohio State.
