Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery suspended 2 games

Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery has been suspended for two games after he made “unsportsmanlike comments” toward an official following the Hawkeyes’ loss Tuesday at Ohio State, university officials said. Gary Barta, director of athletics at the University of Iowa, announced the suspension Wednesday -- a day after the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland tweeted that McCaffery was heard screaming, “You cheating (expletive)! You’re a (expletive) disgrace!” The suspension includes Iowa’s next two games versus Rutgers on Saturday and at Wisconsin on March 7.The Big Ten Conference, which said it supports the suspension, slapped the University of Iowa with a $10,000 fine as a result of violating its sportsmanship policy in addition to issuing a public reprimand.McCaffery apologized for his profanity-laced tirade, saying during a news conference Wednesday afternoon that his profession revolves around a “very competitive environment” and that “emotions got the better of me.”Barta said the coach’s comments “do not represent the values of the University of Iowa, Hawkeye Athletics and our men’s basketball program. Fran immediately accepted responsibility for his comments and understands the severe implications of his remarks.” McCaffery is in his ninth season at Iowa. The Hawkeyes, who were ranked 22nd in Monday’s poll, have three regular season games left. McCaffery was suspended a game for arguing with officials in 2014.
