'It's a smile that I miss coming down the hallway': Teen remembered after tragedy in Eldora
The 13-year-old girl found dead in an Eldora home Sunday is being remembered for her infectious smile and artistic capabilities.
Authorities with the Eldora Police Department and Hardin County Sheriff's Office responded around 5:30 p.m. Sunday to a 911 call from a residence on 12th Street in Eldora, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The call indicated that someone had been shot.
Authorities found a 13-year-old girl had died at the residence. A 12-year-old boy was placed in custody.
South Hardin Schools superintendent Adam Zellmer confirmed to vlog that the teenage girl was a student at South Hardin Middle School.
"It's a smile that I miss coming down the hallway," Zellmer said. "It's a student that I know was artistic and fun-loving and kindhearted and hardworking."
Zellmer said the loss of the female student is affecting everybody.
"It's kind of like at the dinner table, looking around the dinner table and not having someone here," he said. "That's been the case for the last couple of days."
Central Rivers AEA provided more than a dozen staff members to help students and staff cope with the tragedy on Monday and Tuesday. The superintendent said he hopes to provide continued support for the community.
"We're going to come together. We're going to love one another," Zellmer said. "We're going to support one another, and we're going to get through this together."
Zellmer said the 12-year-old boy taken into custody was also a student at the school.
vlog is working to learn if he faces any criminal charges. The Hardin County attorney declined to comment, saying it's a juvenile case. Law enforcement has yet to release more details about the incident.
