糖心vlog archives: Paul 'Mr. Drake' Morrison looks back at the beginnings of the Drake Relays
Elite high school, college and Olympic athletes from all over the world compete at the Drake Relays. But the relays weren't always the spectacle they've become.
In 1910, Drake University Athletic Director John L. Griffin wanted competition for his track team. But the other early season indoor meets were in St. Louis and Kansas City, and Drake didn't have the budget to travel.
So, he decided to hold a relay carnival in mid-April and invited other Des Moines area schools to compete.
The weather during the Relays is always unpredictable. A late April blizzard hit the area on competition day, but that didn't stop the nearly 100 athletes from competing 鈥 and about 100 spectators from watch, according to Paul "Mr. Drake" Morrison.
Watch the video above from 2010 to learn more about the history of the Relays from Morrison, then-Drake Athletic Historian. (Morrison died at age 100 in 2017.)
The 2024 Drake Relays begins on , with the half marathon and 5k road races.
