Diante Garrett named Iowa State basketball assistant coach
A former Iowa State star player is back in Ames as an assistant coach.
Diante Garrett, who spent four years at Iowa State as a player from 2007-11 under Greg McDermott and Fred Hoiberg, has been named an assistant coach, the program announced Thursday.
“Diante will be a great addition to our program,” head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “His experience playing for Iowa State, and his time in the NBA, will greatly impact the development of our student-athletes. This will be a great start to Diante’s coaching career. We’re excited to have the caliber of person Diante is around our players, both on and off the court.”
Garrett was a role player early in his career before blossoming as a senior under Hoiberg. He averaged 17.3 points per game and led the Big 12 with 6.1 assists per game as a senior.
Garrett spent parts of two seasons in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz before embarking on a long playing career overseas.
