BEN. OKAY, OPHELIA. THANK YOU. NEW AT SIX DALLAS CENTER-GRIMES SCHOOLS NOW HAVE A COMMITTEE DEDICATED INTO LOOKING INTO CONCERNS EXPRESSED BY PARENTS ABOUT BOOKS IN THEIR STUDENT SCHOOLS. THE COMMITTEE IS MADE UP OF THREE DISTRICT STAFF MEMBERS AND THREE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC. IF A PARENT BRINGS ANY EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL OR LIBRARY BOOK CONCERN TO DISTRICT’S ATTENTION. THIS GROUP DECIDES WHETHER IT SHOULD REMAIN IN THE SCHOOL. THE DISTRICT APPROVED THE SO-CALLED RECONSIDERATION COMMITTEE DURING LAST NIGHT’S SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. SUPERINTENDENT SCOTT BLOOM SAYS THE GOAL IS TO LIVE UP TO DISTRICT POLICY. WE ARE NOT HERE TO BAN BOOKS. THAT’S A THAT’S A NOT. WHAT WE ARE HERE TO DO, THOUGH, IS FOLLOW STATE LAW AND DISTRICT POLICIES THAT ARE SET OUT. IF ANY PARENT OR FAMILY MEMBER WANTS TO CHALLENGE A PIECE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL OR A LIBRARY BOOK. Book challenging was a topic of conversation at the Dallas Center-Grimes school board meeting Monday night.A Grimes bookstore owner spoke to the board about the potential removal of two graphic novels from DC-G libraries. She compared stories to parts of a house, saying stories open doors to imagination.The DC-G board and superintendent have considered setting up a reconsideration committee that would take up any contested materials. There is not an active complaint, but a different reconsideration committee did take up two books that a parent contested.
