SENATE FILE 496 WAS SIGNED INTO LAW IN 2023. IT REQUIRES SCHOOLS TO REMOVE BOOKS DEPICTING SEXUAL ACTS. IT ALSO PROHIBITS DISCUSSIONS ON GENDER IDENTITY AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION BEFORE THE SEVENTH GRADE. THE NEW RULES SAY STAFF AND ADMINISTRATORS WHO FAIL TO FOLLOW THE LAW WILL FIRST RECEIVE A WRITTEN WARNING. REPEATED OFFENSES COULD MEAN APPEARING BEFORE THE IOWA BOARD OF EDUCATIONAL EXAMINERS.
