10-year-old cancer survivor befriends Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum
NUMBER ZERO NOW SHARE. CELTICS FANS EVERYWHERE ARE FEELING PRETTY STOKED TODAY. XAVIER GONZALEZ EVEN A LITTLE MORE SO THAN THE REST OF US. YOU SEE, THAT’S THE GAME BALL FROM LAST NIGHT. XAVIER’S FRIEND JASON GAVE IT TO HIM AFTER HE SCORED A RECORD 51 POINTS WITH IT. IT WAS REALLY COOL AND IT WAS REALLY SURPRISING THAT HE WAS ABLE TO TRUST ME WITH THE BALL AND JUST TRUST ME IN GENERAL TO HANDLE THIS WITH CARE. IT’S A FRIENDSHIP THAT STARTED ABOUT FOUR WEEKS AGO. XAVIER IS HERE IN BOSTON BEING TREATED FOR CANCER. TATUM HEARD ABOUT HIS COURAGEOUS FIGHT AND SURPRISING XAVIER WITH TICKETS AND A PAIR OF AUTOGRAPHED JORDAN TATUM ONES. THE TWO HIT IT OFF AND HAVE STAYED IN TOUCH. HE’S JUST GENUINELY KIND AND A NICE PERSON AND HE REALLY YOU CAN SEE LIKE WHEN THEY’RE TALKING AND HANGING OUT, HE REALLY CARES ABOUT HIM. LIKE JAYSON TATUM, XAVIER ALSO IS SURROUNDED BY A TEAM OF ALL STARS FROM DANA-FARBER CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL AND MACI AND CHEER. HE’S ALSO HAD UPS AND DOWNS ON HIS JOURNEY, AND THAT’S WHERE THE TWO HAVE CONNECTED ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF TEAM AND PERSISTENCE. THERE’S A LOT THAT I’VE LEARNED FROM HIM TRYING TO LIKE, HELP ME FOCUS ON NOT ONLY GETTING THROUGH IT, BUT STAYING UP WITH IT, STAYING POSITIVE, EVEN ON THE BAD DAYS, CAN PAY OFF THAT XAVIER A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO RINGING THE BELL TO MARK THE END OF HIS RADIATION AND CHEMO LAST NIGHT, XAVIER BROUGHT HIS POSITIVE ENERGY TO THE GARDEN. BY THE WAY, THAT WORN. BUT WINNING BALL IS A LOT MORE THAN A SOUVENIR. DOES IT FEEL SPECIAL WHEN YOU HOLDING IT THERE? YEAH, IT DOES. IT LIKE BEING ABLE TO SEE THE WARPING AND SEE LIKE HOW IT HONESTLY REMINDS ME OF HOW HARD THEY TRY AND HOW HARD I TRY AND HOW IT’S LIKE KIND OF SIMILAR. WELL SAID. AND NICE TO KNOW THAT EVEN WITH ALL THE STRESS AND HOOPLA OF A MUST-WIN PLAYOFF GAME, PLAYERS LIKE JAYSON TATUM MAKE TIME FOR THE FRIENDS THEY’VE MADE ALONG THE WAY.
