WITH BREAKING NEWS. THAT BREAKING NEWS FROM THE DES MOINES POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATORS JUST RELEASING THE NAME OF THE MAN WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED BY POLICE AT A DOWNTOWN APARTMENT COMPLEX. THEY SAY 70 YEAR OLD CHARLES LEONARD RAISED A PELLET GUN TOWARD OFFICERS LAST TUESDAY, AND THE OFFICERS FIRED. THOSE OFFICERS HAVE ALSO BEEN PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. THEY ARE IDENTIFIED AS SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS. CHRISTIAN BISHOP AND LENNY HERZOG. ONCE AGAIN, THEY ARE ON ADMINISTRATIVE ASSIGNMENT DURING THIS INVESTIGATION. POLICE SAY THE SUSPECT LIVED AT THE L.C. Authorities on Monday identified the suspect who was armed with a pellet gun last week when Des Moines police officers shot and killed him.The suspect, 70-year-old Charles Leonard, lived at the Elsie Apartments, located at 430 Grand Ave. Around 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, he reportedly threatened a woman on the first floor of that building with the gun before raising it toward officers who responded to the scene.The pellet gun did not have its orange-colored safety cone attached, according to a news release from Des Moines police. Two officers fired shots at Leonard, killing him.The officers involved were also identified Monday. According to a news release from DMPC, they are Senior Police Officer Christian Bishop, a four-year law enforcement veteran who has served with the DMPD since 2022, and Senior Police Officer Lanny Herzog, who has served with the DMPD since 2022. Both officers are on paid administrative assignment, part of the department's policy for employees following an on-duty critical or traumatic incident.
