According to the guardian, the brain shrinks by 0.2 to 0.5% per year starting at the age of 35 which can contribute to memory lapse, dementia and other issues. Science alert notes that scientists analyzed data for almost 400,000 people aged 40 to 69 to see how those who are genetically programmed to nap regularly fared cognitively compared to those who lacked comparable genes. Researchers found that nappers had larger brains equivalent to those who were 2.6 to 6.5 years. Younger nappers brains were on average 0.96 cubic inches larger. Previous research on adults over the age of 65 found that daytime napping improved short term cognition with nappers outperforming non nappers in cognitive tests. The new study didn't record nap length but prior studies suggest naps under 30 minutes are best. According to science alert

Best Overall Mattress for Side Sleepers

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Cloud

tempurpedic.com
$1,999.00

There’s nothing quite like a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Known for its pressure-relieving foam, several testers have said that they haven't experienced anything as comfortable and contouring as this mattress. And while there’s no denying that the brand’s offerings come with a hefty price tag, this new release is shipped to your door and uses the same proprietary foam as the brand's other offerings at a lower cost. On top of its comfortable feel and unparalleled pressure relief, the mattress also cradles your hips and shoulders to promote neutral alignment of your spine, which is especially important to side sleepers who struggle with hip pain.

What's it made of: The all-foam model uses three layers of foam: A layer of soft, cushioning foam on top; a firm, supportive middle layer and a supportive bottom base. Users can also opt for the hybrid version, which swaps the supportive base foam for a mix of coils and foam.

Tester notes: Several of our panelists raved about the luxurious feel of this bed with one commenting, "It's like sleeping on a cloud." On top of that, panelists gave it high scores for comfort, support and overall sleep quality in addition to highlighting the motion isolation. Some even mentioned that they couldn't feel their partners move or get up at all while lying on the bed. Plus, while Tempur-Pedic notes that the bed may feel firm when you first lie down, our testers confirmed that it quickly molds to properly contour your body for personalized support. One tester commented, "I feel like my entire body is supported in a very gentle way."

allswellhome.com
$377.00

Height: 12"
Firmness level: Medium
Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
Trial period: 100 nights

If you're looking for the best mattress under $1,000, this affordable bed outperformed pricier models over double the cost. Though it has an overall medium firmness rating, its layers of foam at the top make it feel like a plush bed that conforms your pressure points as you lie on your side. The brand offers several different models — including and options — but this one offers the best bang for your buck and provides the softest feel for cradling comfort.

What it's made of: There's a quilted surface over a two-inch layer of memory foam for pressure relief and a one-inch layer of high-density foam for support. The bottom layer is made up of coils for more support to help prevents the foam from sinking in too much.

Tester notes: This mattress ships to you in a box within days, and testers gave it high scores for ease of ordering and ease of set up. Users also consistently raved about the support and pressure relief with comments like, "I like that it forms to your body" and "I love that it is comfortable and doesn't sag in the middle when I sleep on it." The main complaint testers had was that the edges sink down more than they expected.

$0.00

Firmness level: Medium firm
Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King
Trial period: 100 nights

If you rely on Amazon for fast and free shipping, this all-foam bed-in-a-box is inexpensive for those on a budget and arrives within days for time-sensitive orders. What it's made of: The simple model contains two layers of foam, including a firm supportive foam on the bottom with a softer foam on top for pressure relief.

Tester notes: Users note that it's easy to set up and comfortable to sleep on, plus they say the brand's customer service is friendly and helpful. A few side sleepers said they appreciated its all-foam design, with feedback like, "I don’t feel the springs of a traditional mattress when I sleep on my side." What it's made of: This jam-packed hybrid model includes supportive coils, several layers of foam and a fiber-fill pillowtop.

Tester notes: It has glowing reviews from people who noticed relief from their back pain. $1,836.00

Height: 12 inches
Firmness level: Medium Soft
Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Short Queen, Queen, King, California King

Casper's most plush mattress has a unique ergonomic layout to help keep your spine aligned: It uses contoured foam that gives relief around your shoulders with more firmness for your lower back. And even though it feels soft, it still offers the necessary support for side sleepers.

What it's made of: There are two layers of foam on top with small holes throughout for air flow. The first layer is plush, and the second layer is soft at the shoulders yet firmer around the middle of your body. The third layer of foam is the zoned section for ergonomic alignment. And because it's a hybrid, it adds the support of coils at the bottom.

Tester notes: It's a somewhat newer model for the brand so we don't have as much long-term feedback yet, but testers told us it immediately felt comfortable and supportive. One told us, "I like how it conforms to my body... I feel like I sink into it, but that it isn't too soft." Our panel has also praised Casper's other models for many years.

How we test mattresses

Our analysts first review the materials, special features and other relevant specifications. They also research the brands, any potential certifications and whether there are complaints that could affect the user experience. We then have our product experts and consumer testers try out the mattresses firsthand, plus we send questionnaires to our panel of Good Housekeeping readers to get additional in-depth feedback on the mattresses they already own.

Surveys are sent to our testers after several weeks of sleeping on the mattress to get initial feedback. Then we continue to survey them over an extended period — i.e. months through years later — to see how the mattress holds up over time. Each survey addresses a range of aspects, including:

✔️ Ordering and delivery: Users provide ratings and comments about the ease of ordering, how quickly it showed up and whether there were any issues throughout these steps.

✔️ Set up: Whether it's DIY or white glove delivery, we explore how easy the process was and whether the mattress took shape quickly.

✔️ Firmness level: Oftentimes the perceived firmness doesn't match up to the brand's specified level. This helps us gain insight into how soft or firm it feels in real life.

✔️ Edge support: Reviewers let us know whether the bed sinks when they sit on the edges or if it holds the shape well under weight.

✔️ Comfort: Testers weigh in on whether they liked sleeping on the mattress immediately and again later in the review period. They're able to provide a comfort rating as well as detailed comments.

✔️ Support: Similarly, testers share their thoughts on the level of support over time.

✔️ Temperature: We ask users whether they stayed at a comfortable body temperature throughout the night so we can note whether any cooling features were observed.

✔️ Sleep quality: Respondents let us know if the mattress has had any effect on their sleep, whether they wake up sore and whether they are overall satisfied with the mattress. They also have the opportunity to compare the mattress with other models they've owned.

✔️ Additional feedback: Through a series of open-ended questions, testers can share any likes, dislikes and further comments about their experiences.

What type of mattress is best for side sleepers?

Side sleepers need a softer surface than back or stomach sleepers to keep their spine aligned. Here's what to consider when you shop:

    • Mattress type: Memory foam and hybrid mattresses are your best bet because they offer pressure relief for proper alignment, whereas innerspring mattresses can't contour around pressure points.

Firmness level: Side sleepers need a mattress with soft or medium firmness. If it’s too firm, you’ll be putting pressure on areas like your hips and shoulders, which may cause you to wake up with pain. That being said, you don't want the mattress to be too soft either; if you sink in too much then there won’t be enough support to maintain a neutral spine.

    • Body type: Consider your body type when choosing your bed's firmness. If you're heavier, you may need a firmer mattress to prevent sinking, while those with smaller frames should opt for a softer surface for alignment.

Trial period: Regardless of what type of mattress you choose, it's a good idea to check what you can do if you don't love it. Most companies — especially ones that sell online — allow you to sleep on the bed for several months then return it for a full refund if it's not a good fit.

Cooling features: Most side-sleeper mattresses contain memory foam for pressure relief, but foam can trap in body heat and cause hot sleepers to sweat at night. To find a , look for foam ones that have phase change technology, gel or copper particles to help keep you at a comfortable temperature. Hybrid mattresses with coils also allow for more airflow.

    Why trust us

We extensively evaluate data from both the mattress companies and our internal analysis before making mattress recommendations. Here's how we make sure to get the most comprehensive reviews possible:

✔️ We consider a range of body types and sleep preferences: Rather than having just one person try out the mattress, we combine feedback from both our product testers and real consumers. We factor in material preferences, body types, sleep positions and any potential sleep issues, like overheating at night or experiencing back pain.

✔️ Long review periods: Most of our testers give rave reviews on their mattresses when they first try them out. We start to see more complaints over time — especially around the one year mark — so we continue to follow up with reviewers to get long-term feedback.

✔️ We take a wholistic approach: The feel of the bed is just one aspect to consider when you shop. We look at everything from the speed and ease of getting the mattress on your bed to how well it holds up over time. We even research the brands to make sure we're not recommending ones with major customer service issues, misleading marketing or potentially unsafe aspects.

✔️ We're industry experts: Our team is comprised of fiber scientists and engineers with extensive experience testing bedding. We're also regularly called upon by other media sources for mattress recommendations and shopping tips.
