Facilitating and Assessing the Benefits of Mentorship in Academic Medicine

This thoughtful article by Yu et al1 is the product of a combined survey and interview-based assessment of mentorship at 18 academic surgical programs with wide regional representation across the United States. Their principal conclusions were that informal mentorship (ie, mentors picked by mentees and not assigned) was more highly valued and that concordance of nonacademic characteristics facilitated mentee satisfaction.
