Abstract

Children Under Stress is a book written by Dr. Sula Wolff, who is a child psychiatrist, pediatrician, and researcher in development and behavior disorders of childhood. The book is concise and well-written. Its main purpose is to cover the vast range of childhood stresses and the child's capacity for coping with them. The first three chapters succeed rather nicely in laying the ground work with excellent discussions of personality development (emotional and intellectual), symptom formation, and the incidence of behavior disorders in children. Chapter four is an excellent presentation of the youngster going to the hospital and his coping with short-term and long-term stress. There are numerous practical suggestions as to what can be done to make the hospital stay less traumatic and sterile. The chapter on bereavement is also quite good, except that there is not enough depth in connecting the manifestations of depression in childhood and adolescence with
