Informant Effect on Placebo Response in Mental Disorders—Reply

In Reply We appreciate the feedback and additions to our systematic review.1 As correctly described by Furukawa and Cuijpers, we used pre-post effect sizes to quantify the placebo response. Because symptom improvement in placebo groups should be quantified independently of the effects in active study arms, pre-post changes are the appropriate measure and are in line with previous comparative analyses of placebo responses, as seen in the studies by Khan et al2 and Sugarman et al.3 In our opinion, response, or remission, rates are unsuitable for comparison across different diagnoses because different response definitions are used for different disorders. The ratio of means, also mentioned, is suitable for comparing intervention groups with control groups,4 which is not applicable to our research question.
